The original village was built on the site of the ancient Greek trading post of Calidianus. Traces of a Roman settlement have also been found here, ransacked by Saracens and pirates. Today's town was founded in the year 1000 by monks from the Lérins islands, who named it after one of the Saints of their order - Maxime.
