The commune of Roquebrune is one of the largest of the Var (27 km) and is divided into three parts :

Roquebrune village : has a rich cultural and architectural heritage, surrounded by forests and fields under the dominating Rock of Roquebrune (373 m of red sandstone towering over the valley visible from miles away reminding the landscapes of the far west!). Don't miss its charming narrow alleyways, 16th century porticoes, castrum (castle), medieval chapels, living witnesses to long past days.

La Bouverie : residential quarter that contrasts with the old village by its modernism, in spite of the presence of prehistoric caves.

Les Issambres : the coast line of the commune with 8 km of beaches, coves and rocky shores.

The richness of Roquebrune comes from its diversity : the mountains to the north, the historic village and the seashore to the south.

Area : 26 206 acres
Population : 11 400 inhabitants
Altitude : 15 m

In the early 11th century, after the territory was won back from the Saracens, a small settlement set up on the rocky spur then called "Roca Bruna" (Brown Rock).
The site of the ochre-coloured sandstone rocks situated right at the end of the Maures chain is know as "Les Issambres".

The name given to this 8 km coastal stretch of the village is reminiscent of that of the Ligurian "Cimbre" tribes that occupied the region in days gone by.
The old folks used to refer to this bay as "Sinus Sambracitanus", which was then deformed to become Les Issambres..
